There are many lovely natural makeup lines for everyday wear. but if you don't know where to look, it can be a challenge (and a costly trial-and-error process) to find ones that have the same color vibrancy and staying power as their non-natural counterparts.
"It's not that natural makeup brands aren't good; in fact, they can be great for everyday wear for some people," explains Nyssa Green, celebrity makeup artist and founder of The Green Room Agency. "Many natural brands tout their minerals as a base, but sometimes the particles in minerals are too large and can come off as ashy or too reflective. A lot of my clients are on TV, red carpets or settings that require products that I know can deliver with maximum impact."
Here, the Emmy-award-winning makeup artist, who has worked with everyone from the Real Housewives of Atlanta personalities to Barack Obama, shares a few natural makeup brands and products that she uses and loves:
Sally B's Skin Yummies
Why the line is great:
Sally B’s Skin Yummies' makeup is made from organic, natural and wild-crafted ingredients. The entire collection is certified as cruelty-free by Leaping Bunny, and is free of parabens, mineral oil and petroleum, GMOs, formaldehyde, heavy metals, synthetic colors, artificial fragrances and more.
Green's top picks:
B Glossy Lip Gloss
"It gives a hint of color and a little bit of shimmer in really natural shades. It has tons of moisturizer, so it's great alone or mixed with lipstick."
B Smudged Organic Cream Eye Color
"It's really easy to use. I smudge it at the base of the lashes for definition. For more dramatic looks, I use it as a base and add pencil and liquid on top."
PÜR
Why the line is great:
(Confession: I'm totally obsessed with PÜR and happy to see it pop up on Green's must-have natural makeup list!) It is an eco-friendly beauty line done right. It is committed to using natural, responsibly sourced ingredients with the skin-care benefits of key antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. It is also 100-percent cruelty-free.
Green's top picks:
Make It Matte Oil Mattifying Blotting Stick
"This is their newest thing that I love! I wish I'd invented it! It can be used before or after makeup application to eliminate shine, and it works."
Miracle Mist Hydrating Setting Spray
"I spray their Miracle Mist on before I start makeup to hydrate, and then after to keep skin fresh."
Eye Polish Liquid Eye Shadow
"Thank me later for this one! It's just so pretty and easy to use. I use it as an eyeshadow base, but it's gorgeous alone, too, and has major staying power."
Volume Vixen Mascara
"This is always in my kit. I'm picky about mascaras, but Volume Vixen makes the cut."
Pnk Digger
Why the line is great:
These highly pigmented, twist-pen-with-brush style lip products promise a petroleum-, gluten-, paraben- and cruelty-free formula that contains natural ingredients and safe colorants. Plus, they hydrate your lips with coconut, almond, avocado and vitamin E oils.
Green's top pick:
lip pigments
"Pnk Digger is one of my favorite lip brands! Founder Stephanie Bennett hand-makes each and every batch, and the colors are so pigmented! The range of colors literally has something for everyone. I think every person I've used Pnk Digger on has wanted to buy it right from my kit! Oh, and the names are fun, too."
Extra Tip: Applying Natural Makeup
There aren't any major differences in applying natural products versus non-natural, but Green says layering and blending go a long way, especially with sheer products. Noted.
